CenfroCafé: organic and fair trade coffee for the Peruvian market

The global coffee crisis of the early 1990s was caused by the brutal deregulation of the international markets and plunged millions of coffee-growing Peruvian families into misery. Some twenty producers got organised and created the CENFROCAFE (Central Fronteriza del Norte de Cafetaleros) cooperative in 1999 to sell their, meanwhile organic and fair trade certified, coffee better.

Today, CENFROCAFE PERU has become the fourth coffee growers organisation in Peru. Since 2009, the teams of CENFROCAFE PERU have been involved in a new project that aims at developing an integrated production and commercialisation chain for organic fair coffee for the domestic market. This programme is supported by the Trade for Development Centre of BTC.
