Fair trade fonio in Mali

Kayes, one of the poorest regions of Mali, is a fonio-growing region. Fonio is considered the oldest cereal cultivated in western Africa. It is used in many African recipes (couscous, doughnuts, bread, cakes).  Grenier du Paysan (Farmer’s Granary) is a commercial business that is owned by Ethiquable and small producers.  Together they’ve succeeded to market Fairtrade certified fonio in since 2007. With the support of the TDC, the company today is stronger and fonio is gaining national and international market access.
