COFTA: Rwanda and Burundi on the road to Fair Trade

For many years, Rwanda and Burundi were not on the fairtrade map because of the security situation in the Great Lakes region. But that is changing now thanks to a project of COFTA, Africa’s regional chapter of the World Fair Trade Organisation, which represents 24 African countries.

The TDC supports the project, which wants to boost the revenue of Rwandan producers by providing access to new markets. The project supports the Rwandan federation RWAFAT with training and coaching its producers and it wants to set up a similar body in Burundi to accompany social production initiatives to become fair trade.
